Coobowie
Due to its large sandy beach, Coobowie (aboriginal for wild fowl and water) is fast becoming a very popular tourist destination. So be sure to book early during the busy seasons. The town provides the tourist with a quiet, relaxed and easygoing holiday, whilst the beach provides the perfect place for relaxing, swimming, and fishing, as well as making for a delightful walking experience. In 1838 because the area around the bay was so beautiful, the explorers assumed there must be fresh water, after travelling 40 km inland and finding none they named Coobowie, 'Deception Bay'.

Story Of Interest
Inspector Tolmer captured 3 bushrangers in Coobowie after they escaped Tasmania, because they had shot 2 policemen. Following their escape they boarded a whaler, from which they stole a boat around Kangaroo Island. The stolen boat was wrecked on the rocks at Western River, Kangaroo Island. From Kangaroo Island they stole a settler's boat and made it to Coobowie. The Bushrangers claimed that they had harpooned a gigantic whale, which pulled them, eventually cut the harpoon line and came a shore at Coobowie. The Bushrangers were consequently taken back to Tasmania and hung.
